Salesforce’s zero-copy partner network put an important alternative on the table in 2024: use governed data where it already lives instead of automatically moving another copy into the CRM estate.
The opportunity was not to eliminate movement everywhere. It was to make latency, authority, cost and governance explicit before selecting replication as the default.
Cloud Group point of view
Data movement is an architectural choice with an operating cost. Zero copy is strongest when the external platform is authoritative, freshness matters and duplicated governance would create more risk than value.
A practical playbook
The strongest next step is narrow enough to govern and useful enough to produce evidence. We would structure the work around these moves:
- Classify the use case as operational, analytical, personalization or AI grounding.
- Confirm which platform owns identity, quality and access decisions.
- Model query frequency, latency tolerance and consumption cost.
- Test deletion, consent and permission propagation end to end.
- Persist only derived values that must support a Salesforce transaction.
The architecture and operating implication
Use zero-copy access for large, governed datasets where virtualized consumption preserves authority. Replicate compact operational facts when resilience, transaction performance or workflow continuity requires them. Document the boundary so users understand whether they are seeing a live fact, a cached profile or a calculated insight.
Measure what changes
Model activity is not a business result. Track a small set of indicators that connect behavior to accountable work:
- Data freshness against the business requirement
- Duplicate-storage and pipeline cost avoided
- Query performance at realistic concurrency
- Access-control and deletion propagation time
The modern data estate should not be judged by how much information it centralizes. It should be judged by how reliably each decision receives the right governed context.
